Piazza di Spagna is one of the characteristic spots of Rome and the Spanish Steps have become a worlds famous monument. Built in 1725, the staircase was built predominantly to link the piazza to the church of Trinità dei Monti at the top of the Pincio hill. The English Romantic poet John Keats spent the last part of his life in a house overlooking the steps and throughout the years the area has attracted many famous writers and artists. Nowadays the steps are the favored meeting place for Romans and foreigners alike. Head to the top at sunset for an unforgettable panorama of the cityscape.
The nearby streets are heaven for those wishing to shop and all of the big designer names have boutiques here. Once a year a lavish fashion show is held with the Spanish Steps being used as a catwalk, at in the spring they are covered with beautiful flowering azaleas.
