There is something for everyone in Rome's rich, varied history. Below is a selection of itineraries which span the ages, art and architecture of the city and its surroundings throughout almost 3,000 years of existence. All tours are conducted by experienced, knowledgable, official guides. 

Ancient Rome (3hrs)- The Roman Empire provided the basis for much of the structure and system of modern culture. This spellbinding itinerary takes you from the foundation of Rome on the Palatine Hill, through the Republican period, to the rise and eventual decline of the Empire. Hear the history and wonder at the Eternal City's most arresting ancient sights such as the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Emperor Hadrian's awe-inspiring masterpiece, the Pantheon.

Vatican Rome (4hrs)-Faith and art converge on this magical trip throught the heart of the Catholic Church. Listen to the dramatic stories of the Popes as you stroll through the unmissable Vatican Museums, home to one of the most important collections of art and artefacts in the world, including the spectacular Sistine Chapel. The immense St Peter's Basilica is the largest church in the world and home to Michelangelo's moving sculpture 'La Pietà' as well as the Papal Tombs. 

Christian Rome (3hrs)- Charter the history of Christianity in Rome with this engrossing tour. Visit three magnificent basilicas (St John Lateran, St Paul's and St Mary Major) and learn the journey of the religion as it grew to dominate and influence the entire city. Also take a trip to the ancient catacombs, a surprisingly tranquil and reverent place of subterranean tunnels which showcase some beautiful early Christian frescoes.

Subterranean Rome (3hrs)- Due to a long period of abandonment during the middle ages, much of the ancient city of Rome was covered and buried. Take a trip beneath the churches, palaces and streets of the modern town and be amazed at the underground labyrinth of tunnels and buildings which were concealed for centuries. This tour will show you some of the most interesting areas of this secret side of the Eternal City. 

Medieval and Renaissance Rome (3hrs)- The medieval, and later Renaissance, period signalled a return to power for Rome after years of decline. Wander the streets of the historic center and discover the delights of two of the most thrilling periods in the city's history through the architecture of the building and churches. The grand palaces of Capranica, Cancelleria, Spada and Farnese are just some of the stops on this intriguing tour

Baroque Rome (3hrs)- The Baroque period of rome is characterized by the work of the sculptor and architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini who left his mark all over the city. Follow his work along with that of the other prominent Baroque artists as you stroll through the city, visiting unforgettable sights such as Piazza Barberini, the church of the Maddalena, the Trevi Fountain, the church of Sant Ignazio and Bernini's amazing Fountain of the Four Rivers in Piazza Navona.

Neoclassical Rome (3hrs)- From the mid 18th to late 19th century the Neoclassical period swept Europe, and Rome, with its wealth of Classical architecture became rejuvenated with a host of buildings which played homage to the city's ancient roots. Follow the steps of Neoclassicism in the Eternal City  and experience this enthralling period through sights such as the soothing, symmetrical Piazza del Popolo and the beautiful views from the Pincio gardens. 

EUR (3hrs)- The 'Espozione Universale Roma' or EUR was conceived by Mussolini in the 1930s and intended to be opened as a Universal Exhibition in 1942 to celebrate 20 years of Fascism. Due to the Second World War it was never officially opened but remains an intriguing area in terms of modern Roman architecture and history. There are some striking examples of Fascist architecture, in particular  the Palazzo della Civiltà di Lavoro, known as the 'square colosseum'.  

Raphael's Rome (3hrs)- One of the most influential and talented artists of all time, Raphael left the tracks of his genius all over the city. Despite dying at the age of 37, he left a substantial amount of paintings, frescoes and architecture all over the city. Follow his life and work as you visit some of his most breathtaking masterpieces filled with colour, grace and harmony. 

Caravaggio's Rome (3hrs)- Caravaggio's daring use of light and shade revolutionised painting in the 17th century. He was enigmatic, rebellious and dangerous, qualities which were expressed through his sensational art. Learn more about the man and his tortured life as you retrace his steps in Rome and visit the palaces and churches which house some of his most striking works.

Jewish Rome (3hrs)- This riveting itinerary explores the significant sites of the oldest Jewish community in Europe. Discover the absorbing streets of the area of the Ghetto where the Jewish community in Rome were confined for over 300 years and where the Jewish traditions live on. This tour recounts the history of this fascinating area and includes visits to the Synagogue, Jewish museum and a host of other intriguing places.

Ostia Antica (4hrs)- Roam through the remarkable ruins of the ancient port town of Ostia. Once a major port of the Roman Empire, the remains of streets, squares, bath house, theater, temples, forum and other areas of the city are all accessible and adorned with well-preserved frescoes, mosaics, reliefs and statues. This is a fantastic substitute if you don't have time to get to Pompei but want a fantastic insight into the everyday life of the Ancient Romans.

Tivoli (6hrs)- Take a trip out of the city to this charming medieval hilltop town and its two impressive villas. The first, Villa Adriana, features the remains of the ambitious countryside residence of Emperor Hadrian. The second, Villa d'Este, is a 16th century palace famous for its magnificent gardens and fountains. This is a great day trip to one of the most attractive towns in the region of Latium. 

All tours are priced at €60 per hour for up to 10 people. In the case that transport is required, this can be arranged by Leisure In Rome at an extra cost.
